The National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program was developed to establish a program for accrediting environmental laboratories. To facilitate this The NELAC Institute developed consensus standards for environmental laboratories to abide by, also known as TNI 2016.

The TNI 2016 standard published by The NELAC Institute is widely recognized as the premier standard for environmental testing laboratories. The standard encompasses rigorous proficiency testing requirements, incorporates all the quality management principles from the 17025 standard as well as industry specific expectations for environmental testing laboratories.

Laboratories accredited to the TNI 2016 standard are recognized as the premier environmental testing laboratories in the world.
