ISO 14001:2026 Implementation Timeline, Training, and Deadlines
By Carrie Hayden & George Cipolla
It’s been a long while, eleven years, since the last 9001 revision. Historically, both the QMS and EMS standards have been revised every seven years. I’m not quite sure whether COVID got in the way of earlier revisions or if the committees took longer to decide which changes were important.
ISO 14001:2026
The ISO 14001 revision was released earlier this year, replacing the ISO 14001:2015 version. What does this mean? For those who have not gone through a transition, the deadline for incorporating the changes can be confusing. Companies must be audited to the 2026 revision no later than May 2029.
Here’s the caveat:
If your audits typically take place from May to December, to avoid a special audit, you will need to implement the changes in time for your 2028 audit.
The Key Changes:
Terminology change – “results” replace “outputs” for management reviews; “fulfillment of” replaces “meeting” compliance obligations.
Clause 4.3e – Context of the Organization – 4.3e states “The organization shall determine the boundaries and applicability of the environmental management system to establish its scope, its authority, and ability to exercise control and influence over the life cycle of its activities, products. and services.”
Clause 5 – Leadership 5.1i – “Top management shall demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the environmental system by supporting other relevant roles to demonstrate their leadership as it applies to their areas of responsibility.”
Clause 6 – Planning – There is a new section that introduces planning from a risk and opportunity perspective.
Clause 7 – Support – Terminology changes
Clause 8 – Operations – reference is made to clause 6.1.4 Risks and Opportunities.
- 8.1 “The organization shall ensure that externally provided processes, products or services that are relevant to the intended outcomes of the environmental management system are controlled or influenced.” More focus is now being placed on suppliers that provide materials and services for environmental management-related activities.
Clause 9 – Performance Evaluation
- 9.1.1 “The organization shall evaluate its environmental performance and the effectiveness of the environmental management system.”
- 9.2.2a “The organization shall define the audit objectives”.
- 9.3 Now syncs with the QMS structure 9.3.1-9.3.3
Clause 10 – Improvement – mainly terminology changes
Gearing up for your ISO 14001:2026 audit, your plan should include:
- Gap assessment – Identify the new and revised requirements
Train staff on the above, and implement the new requirements - Modify your documentation as necessary
- Conduct an Internal audit – Address nonconformances
- Our EMS consultants are already transitioning companies to the new requirements.
